At first it was intended to be an operating system for digital cameras but later the founders of the company Android Inc. decided to hit a larger and more diverse market by developing an operating system for smartphones to rival Symbian and Windows Mobile. In 2005, the acquisition of Android Inc. by Google took place. Since then, Android OS has become an open source platform powered by the Linux kernel. Google Play is the official store for Android applications and in 2013, over 1 million apps were published and over 50 billion were downloaded. Today, Android is used by leading smartphones and tablets manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, Sony and many others.
Since Android OS offers almost all features that are offered by Windows and Mac, Android devices perform pretty much as a mobile computer. Most importantly, you can use Android devices to gain access to the World Wide Web either via 3G & 4G networks or via WiFi and therefore using VPN for Android becomes a must.
Mainly using VPN for Android will enable the user to protect their WiFi connection. We all know that free Wifi hotspots in hotels and airports are not secure enough. WiFi hotspots are the perfect environment for hackers and data sniffers and this puts your personal and financial data in danger. Moreover, some Android apps might be blocked in your country or you might want to access geo-restricted applications, such as Netflix or iPlayer, while traveling. Now using VPN for Android becomes the perfect solution to bypass these restrictions while maintaining your online security and privacy and not compromising your speed at the same time.
Unfortunately, earlier versions of Android OS (before Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3) did not support OpenVPN which is an open source software application that automatically configures VPN on the system. But configuring VPN on Android is still possible using the best alternative for OpenVPN which is L2TP VPN protocol. L2TP is known to be the best replacement for OpenVPN, especially on mobile devices. It features 256-bit encryption and the connection is just as stable and secure as in OpenVPN. The only issue with L2TP is that it is banned in some countries including China.
